Tour of Lawson House – Chicago’s Historic YMCA
Summary
Take a hard hat tour of the Lawson House, Chicago’s historic YMCA being converted into a fully-affordable residential building in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.
The tour will take a behind the scenes look of the on-going renovation project, allow visitors to see the rehabilitation and conservation efforts of the historic property, discuss the historic tax credits and financing behind the project, and provide a platform to discuss preservation’s role in affordable housing.

As this is an active construction site, hard hats and vests are required and will be provided. Visitors must also wear closed toe shoes.
Learning Objectives
Learn how to examine historical materials and exhibits to complete a Part 1 evaluation for review by historic authorities.
Discussion of adaptive reuse strategies, including for MEP systems, updated fire prevention codes, and new program spaces in historic buildings.
Discussion of how historic tax credits layer with other funding sources to finance affordable housing projects.
Engagement with the contractor to discuss sequencing of work to maintain historic spaces while enabling new work.
